  1. When Sethe charged towards Mr. Bodwin (mistaking him for Schoolteacher), did the spirit of Beloved take over physical control of Sethe (due to the fact that Beloved disappeared during the incident)? Or was this simply Sethe still trying to protect her children by killing what looked to be a threat? This would have been a bold move for Sethe, as earlier in the novel she chose to kill her own child before killing Schoolteacher.

  2. 1.) On Page 261, there is a sequence in which Sethe seemingly tries to stab Mr. Bodwin. However, the language in this changes dramatically and gives many Biblical illusions as to what is happening. Is this scene supposed to represent Beloved as taking her last stance to try and contol Sethe and directs her to kill Mr. Bodwin? Does Mr. Bodwin represent God in this scene? If so, does this scene try to show the fight between God--good--and the Devil--evil--and who can prosper in this world? What does this say about the mindset of slavery and racism?

2.) Why is Mrs. Jones constantly associated with raisins and the color yellow? What is the significance of this? How does this relate to Prufrock?

  3. Is sethe and paul d.'s relationship genuine and unique or could sethe and stamp paid potentially share a very very similar one if he and paul d. were interchanged?

  4. What role does giving and receiving food play in the book? Some areas to look at might be Sethe's milk for the babies, the lack of milk that Sethe receives from her own mother, the feast at Baby Sugg's house, the food that community leaves on the stump in front of Mrs. Jones' house, and the dynamic between Sethe and Beloved; Sethe diminishes as Beloved consumes more. Is Morrison implying that providing food is a way of showing love?

When Paul D comes to visit Sethe she seems to be talking nonsense. What is the meaning behind her words?
